With the end of the fall salmon run the prized steelhead and domestic rainbow trout enter the river systems of the eastern Lake Ontario basin to gorge themselves on salmon eggs and the rich aquatic life. These fish stay and winter-over until conditions are optimal and the spawn begins. Although we fish for steelhead all winter long, prime angling begins in late February and continues into May. As the water warms and conditions improve, both before and after the actual spawn, these fish become as aggressive as any fish on earth. It does not matter if they are vying for a females attention, guarding the spawning bed or gorging themselves for the long journey back to Lake Ontario, their appetites are unmatched with any species of cold water fishes. This provides a unique opportunity for both the experienced angler as well as the novice fisherman to experience the screaming drags associated with these majestic fish.
